How does NFC & RFID work?
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) uses radio waves to easily and automatically identify objects or people. You can store variable serial numbers, product information, product part numbers and more.
Using this information, companies can track and trace assets and inventory at the supply chain level, crate level, or product level while using an RFID reader that is affixed from a 30-50 foot read range.
As shown in a recent article on RFID Journal, Bill Hardgrave notes that using RFID for inventory increases accuracy from 65% to a whopping 95%. Removing human interaction during inventory cycle counts results in these two things: increased inventory count accuracy and allowing employees to work on other beneficial tasks.
NFC (Near Field Communication) operates pretty much like RFID but in a closer fashion. This technology requires an NFC-enabled reader to communicate with the tag, typically an inch or less from the reader.
Pretty much every phone made has a reader built into it’s hardware. If you’re familiar with Samsung Pay and Apple Pay.. those are all operated with NFC. In addition to all of that, since October of 2015, all of our credit cards have been mandated to include an NFC chip for added security.
All of these examples show how secure an NFC tag is, mostly because every single chip made has it’s own unique ID which remains unchangeable. What does this mean for brands and retailers? NFC gives brands and retailers a leading edge in providing a unique, compelling and innovative product or digital marketing campaign.
